If you are fortunate enough to have a garage as part of your home, you will know just how useful it can be for storing items. Yet, this is a double-edged sword; while it is a great space to leave items that don’t currently fit in with the rest of the house – think of Christmas decorations and gardening tools – it is also usually a place that is a mess with a mishmash of things stacked on top of one another.
There are, however, ways to transform a cluttered garage into a warm, welcoming area of the house.
Don’t throw everything out
When significantly changing up a garage, one of the first things to do is remove the bulk of what is currently stored in this space. When you’re decluttering, this requires the need to throw masses of items out, right? Well actually, this doesn’t have to be the case.
Sure, there will be a few things residing in your garage that will be heading straight for the bin. However, for the items that you want to actually keep, you are probably wondering where you can move these – considering the garage is usually the last port of call. Well, there is the option of going with a self-storage company. For a minimal fee each week/month, you can store your goods via a secure facility away from home. As a result, it keeps your garage clean, while you still have easy access to your items.
Use the walls and ceiling to store items
Through the simple installation of a wall bracket or ceiling rack, you can free up plenty of space in your garage to hang up for example hiking poles, as you can store items like gardening tools and fishing rods via these methods. With certain tools and equipment, this can also create an eye-catching and natural look for your garage.
Also, don’t ignore the possibility of using storage boxes and shoe racks. Just remember that the garage can still be a practical area even when transformed into a stylish space.
Add a lick of paint
One of the easiest ways to quickly transform any space in the house is by painting it a new colour – and the garage is no exception. Plus, when you consider how a garage is often unkempt, it is probably looking a little drab, scuffed and unappealing – adding a bright lick of paint will help bring the space back to life.
Create it into a space for relaxing
Once you have cleared the space and repainted the garage, it is time to take it to the next level. One way of doing so is by turning it into a second living room of sorts. Now, this doesn’t mean it has to be a replica of your current living space. In fact, it provides you with an ideal opportunity to produce something more akin to your individual tastes. If you are a video game enthusiast, for example, you could make the garage into a dedicating gaming room, where all of your games, consoles and a relaxing seating area can all be contained.
